Have you ever put picture or post online that maybe wasn't very appropriate? Or maybe your friend posted an emmbarrassing picture of you. Did you ever think about how this could effect your future in a bad way? It can and and there's a good chance it will!
More and more colleges are checking social media to form an opinion about you when trying to decide if you should be accepted into their school. If you have bad things on your digital footprint then you are setting yourself up for the potenial of it effecting your future.
Scott A. Mieklejohn is an admissions officer at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Miane who's says "We would have wondered about the judgement of someone who spends all their time on their mobile phone". Out of 381 college admissions officers that participated in a Kaplan telephone survey. About 31% of the admissions officers said they have looked at an applicant's social media account to learn about them. Thats almost 5% more than last year so this strategy use is increasing with time. What students post can sometimes effect the outcome of if they are admitted to the college they want to attend. 30% of the admissions officer said an applicants social media had negaively effected there chances of being accepted. The admissions officers done tell you if your digital footprint had an effect on you admission chances so there is no way to know! Did you ever consider that they could accidentally find somebody else's account who has the same name as the applicant's and think it's the applicant's? "To me, it's a hug problem," said a lawyer named Bradley S. Shear who specializes in social media law. Some people could even make a fake account of the applicant to try to effect the applicant's admission chances negatively! Shear says "false and misleading content is taken as fact". A lot of schools don't even look at the social media account of applicants. This is mainly because the lack of time in relation to the number of applicants. Although a lot of things can hurt your chances of being admitted a lot of things not effect your chances at all. Be careful of what you post online because it can really effect your future!
